Somewhere in late 2005 and early 2006 I had my first brush with the travel industry. Those were the days when I had just come back from New York and joined hands with Amit to solve the burning problem of delivering quality travel to the masses in the burgeoning Indian aviation market.
We spent a little more than 6 years taking that story – Via.com – to 49 countries.
During the tenure of building and running Via.com as the CEO, the one thing that became obvious to me, was that, there is so much this world has to offer. But, how do we organize this information in a way such that beautiful experiences can reach their logical audience with little effort.
Travel content online at best was NOMAD. The game of travel was lost somewhere in the SEO and SEM world. The focus was to get more keywords in and somehow magically bring content above the line.
The scenario online looked worse than offline as travel operators, tourism boards and experts had more challenges to understand technology, online marketing, SEO, SEM, social and so much more, nothing which had to do with what they did best – delivering trips.
The traveler was losing in this battle, as it became harder for them to find what they needed and get to the real answers, experiences and experts.
We felt, like Google, Facebook and Amazon, travel too needed a destination online, which is the go-to place when people think of travel.
It was not about making a lot of money, it was just about making it simple for the world to find the world.
Travelers would be able to find complete information, without having the anxiety of missing out on something, or dealing with frustrating results, price worries and final experiences.
The resolve in our minds had precipitated. And we took the plunge early this year in 2013 to give the world a destination for travel.
