Cellular Jail at Port Blair is a must-visit and most popular tourist attraction. The erstwhile kaala paani jail has a place of pride in India’s freedom struggle. Many a stalwart were imprisoned here. The jail, completed in the year 1906, acquired the name ‘Cellular’ because it is entirely made up of individual cells for the solitary confinement. This colossal edifice has mutely witnessed the most treacherous of inhumane atrocities borne by the convicts, who were mostly freedom fighters. The day draws to a gentle close with the Light and Sound Show, which is probably going to be the best part of your visit to the jail. Voiced by veteran actor Om Puri, the show includes a narration of the poignant stories of the prisoners tortured in the jail.
